Questions to ask a developer before paying a deposit

A simple article listing questions you should ask your development provider before paying your deposit and signing off on the job

If you have budget set aside for a new build, or for improving your tech stack to make your working life easier, you want to be sure it is spent efficiently. Even when you have found your dream tech partner, it is worth confirming a few things up front so the finished project matches what you agreed.

Here are the questions we recommend asking before you commit.

How much will it cost?

Your developer should give you an estimate of how long the work will take, usually in hours or days, alongside their rate. For a one-off job, they may quote a flat fee instead.

When will the project be delivered?

Ask for a delivery date and, on larger projects, key milestones along the way. Timelines depend on both sides, so to avoid delays, respond promptly when your developer asks for access, approvals or answers.

What is included in the fee?

Request a full breakdown of the pricing. Monthly maintenance fees often cover web hosting and minor amends, but always check exactly what is and is not included.

What are the payment terms?

Many developers take a deposit before the project starts, with the balance due on completion or at agreed stages. Make sure you know what the deposit covers and what happens if the project is paused or cancelled. For ongoing work, the structure may involve regular monthly payments. Clarify this and keep a record of all invoices.

What do you need from me?

Your developer will need access to some of your tools and accounts, and should send you step-by-step instructions on how to grant it. As the build progresses, they may come back with questions about how you would like to proceed. A good developer will give you a couple of options and explain why each might suit you.

What happens after the project is completed?

Find out whether your developer will be available for further support, and how much that will cost.

Asking these questions early sets clear expectations for both parties and helps your budget go further. If you are planning a project and would like to talk it through, get in touch with us at Making Stuffs.
